Camp Moss Hollow
Located in Markham, VA on more than 400 acres
of beautiful woods, nestled in the foothills of
the Shenandoah National Park, Moss Hollow is
seventy miles west of Washington, D.C.
Affectionately called The Youth Zone
, the
program provides year-round educational,
recreational, and socialization services for
youth and teens, seven to fourteen years old from
metro D.C., Maryland and Virginia. This serene
environment features miles of hiking and nature
trails and:
- Rustic wood Cabins,
- A Health Center,
- An Academic Pavilion,
- A Challenge Course,
- A large Swimming Pool,
- A Basketball Court,
- A Softball Field,
- Tent Camping,
- A Large Dining Hall, and
- A two-acre Lake
Camp Moss Hollow receives generous support from the community through The Washington Post Annual Send-a-Kid-to-Camp campaign to help children from all economic situations enjoy camp life. many children will experience their first time away from home and away from the hustle of an urban environment

Life
Children are grouped into four residential villages based on age and gender. Village life centers on age-appropriate activities that focus on building individual and interpersonal skills. The overall goal for each camper is to develop self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment while having fun!

2008 Wish List
We not only welcome financial contributions, but in-kind donations as well. Our campers are 7 to 14 years old. Thank you in advance for your support!
- Sheets, blankets and sleeping bags
- Towels and wash cloths (must be new)
- Raincoats and ponchos (must be clean)
- Sweatshirts for cool evenings and hikes (must be clean)
- Bathing suits and shower shoes (must be new)
- Combs and brushes
- Hair accessories for girls
- Girls and boys underwear and socks (must be new)
- Playing cards
- Board games: Checkers/Chess/Uno/Monopoly
- Craft supplies: construction paper, glue, beads, tempera paint, baby food jars (for crafts, etc), craft sticks, tissue paper, yarn, brushes and easels
- Plain white t-shirts for stenciling and special events (must be clean)
- Garden supplies
- Basketballs, soccer balls, softball equipment and tennis equipment
Wearable items are needed in all sizes.

The Staff
Camp Moss Hollow engages a multi-talented, culturally and racially diverse staff that includes a full-time on-site nurse. There is one staff member for every five campers.
Eligibility and Enrollment
Camp Moss Hollow serves all children, regardless of residence, race or religion, between the ages of seven and fourteen years, and who are physically able and willing to participate. Each camper can enroll in a maximum of two, nonconsecutive sessions. Enrollment is on a first come, first-served basis.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees are based on a sliding scale according to income. This scale is located in the camp brochure.
Registration Procedure
Enrollment is conducted at the Family and Child Services of Washington, D.C., Inc., 1509 16th Street NW Washington, DC 20036. You must call to make an appointment at (202)289-1510 (ext. 1187). Registration hours are Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM and Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
The registration and medical forms needed to attend camp will be available at registration. You can also find them at this website.
Please bring the following items to the appointment:
- Child's Social Security number of card and a birth certificate,
- Child's medical insurance information or card,
- Proof of total family income such as pay stubs, W2s or tax forms, and
- A non-refundable Registration Fee of $25.
It is important that all parents make an appointment for their child to get a physical examination as soon as possible. All health forms must be signed by a physician.
Transportation
Bus service is provided from the D.C. metro area. On departure day, parents must arrive by 7:45AM and must stay until the buses depart for camp at 8:30 AM. Parents must arrive to greet their children on their return to the city at 6:00PM on the return date.
